OK.... so im not to sure who still reads my xanga   cuz ive been using it as a way of taking some notes for my recording techniques class.

but here is what ive been up to, where im at, and where im heading.

what ive been up too and where im at...
of my time durring the week i have school and work.  still working at the follet's cod bookstore.  its a stable job, very easy being a cashier, sometimes they will have me in GM but its just like moving and restockin stuff nothing like really hard to do or really tiring.
as of school wise... im still taking my first year of theory, piano, aural skills, recording techniques, and a music lit class.  all of them im pretty good with, but behind a bit homework wise.  i have to do all this writing (papers) for music lit, and all this writing (music) for my music classes.  i have a couple more weeks left till im done with it.
also im currently working in the studio with a band from depaul.  they are pretty good but dont exactly have a direction to go in.  which is my job.
as for basketball,   NSBA 07 on its way.  just keep on playing. trying to get better everyday.    tried to start lifting again to build some mass on me.

ok now for where im headed...
this is the REASON for the blog.   this summer i need to take summer school in order to catch up and finish on time.  so much preasure from the parents to finish school quickly.  SO i need to take summer classes.  yet i also want to work, and today i had a talk to one of the managers and they asked me if i would like it be promoted to head cashier.   pay is more, but i would have to train people, and then i would deal with all the bitchy costomers. but more or less its the same damn thing ive been doing.  but the reason why im thinking about it is becuase,     a couple weeks ago my parents got word from my cuzins in germany. .... yes i do have cuzins in germany.    and he was part owner of a construction business. but due to some problems with the company they had to fold.  though the construction was only kinda like something he had to do to support the family.  he originally studdied film and video.  and so he was lucky to get a break with the same company that produced and created lord of the rings.   and now that he is a president of that  he is asking me if i would like an internship and work for them.  and i would be doing the sound engineering for the videos.  recording, mixing, tracking, and editing all the sound effects, music, vocal scripts, and all that jazz.      IT IS SO SWEET.  i can actually DO THE REAL DEAL kinda work. and get my feet soaked in the buisness full time.   but if i take the internship i will be leaving for 2 months of the summer to do the intenship and i will be going to vancuver in canada.  cuz that is where the company is currently stationed.

so im in a position... which to do
take summer school and finish with my AFA in music
while working in the bookstore as a headcashier.
or going to canada for an internship that is BIG BIG DEAL!!! (but i dont feel i am ready for yet)

what should i do? i need advice

Meters - Let engineer watch levels
peak meters measure transient peaks of a wave
VU meters (volume units) measure constant/average level of a signal.    (how humans preceive)

EQ         Filters that work with timbreof a sound
shelving filters - reaches a level (+ or - db) and once that level is reached it stays constant

                    see fig. 1

On a console these types of filters are used for H & L frequencies
peaking filters resembles a bell shaped curve

                    see fig. 2

BandWidth also knnown as "Q" of the filter. High "Q" number means a narrower peak filter shich affects less frequencies on either side of the center frequencies A larger Q number means a broader filter with more frequencies affected

A high pass filter lets highs pass!   (cutsoff lows)

A low pass filter lets lows pass!     (cutsoff highs)

Roll off is measured in db/Octave
6db/octave     1st order filter
12db/octave   2nd order filter
18db/octave   3rd order filter
24db/octave    4th order filter

Band pass filter - user sets H & L freq for cutoffs
frequencies in between those cutoffs are passed.

                   see fig. 3

Compressor - an automatci fader that reduces the dynamic range of the program
controls             Threshold
                         Ratio
Attack - how slowly/quickly compressor tunrs on
Release - how slowly/quickly compressor turns off
                         Input Gain
                         Output Gain

Limiter is a compressor with extreme rations 100:1

Clipper is a circuit level protection that sets a "hard" ceiling

Slope of the compressor can be linear (Hard Knee) or more exponential (soft knee)

Expansion - opposite of compression but audio makes use of downward expanders
with downward, expanders loud signals are not increased.  Increases the gain of low level signals
Ratio is backwards  1  :  2
                               in : out
Headroom in a system is the operating space between 0db and distortion

Time based processing

Phase uses 2 signals and is a phenomenon that occurs when one signal is delayed

Phasing , Flanging , Chorus ,              30ms temproal fusion
  10ms        20ms       30ms
SFX         SFX       doubling

Delay signal and additional iterations
Reverb - set of dense closely spaced reflections  which is a characteristic of the performance of music in a large space
Reverb has 3 aspects
1. direct sound      2. early reflection field   3. reverb
reverb is darker in timber than the direct sound and is marked by a gradual decrease in amplitude
RT 60  - the time that it takes from the direct sound to a 60db drop from the direct sound
